...and some more for a rainy day

  • Lots of wonderfully weird words and their definitions. The rest of the site is worth a look too.
  • The Asylum Eclectica is another wonderfully weird site. All things dark & gruesome, morbid fact du jour, malady of the month... The blog links to these creepy photos of the abandoned Traverse City State Hospital, formerly known as the Northern Michigan Asylum.
  • Steam Trek is where Steampunk and Star Trek become one:  Æther, the final frontier... These are the voyages of Her Majesty's Æther Ship Dauntless. Our mission, to explore romantic new worlds, seek out life, and expand civilization, to boldly go where no gentleman has gone before.
  • Middle-Earth tours offer an amazing amount of LotR and Tolkien facts and trivia and lots of artwork by John Howe, Alan Lee, Ted Nasmith, & co.
  • A Tolkien dictionary is exactly what the title says, and it's ever so nicely done. A work of art as dictionaries go.
  • ...and when you get fed up with all the serious Tolkien facts and whatnot, there's always Stupid Ring (although this one sadly lacks an audio file):

Quotes from Ask the character:

[to] Legolas: You seemed pretty excited about the whole "join the fellowship/go to Mordor/defeat Sauron" thing. But Sauron had been in your own forest for years. If you're so keen to defeat him, why didn't you just get him when he was right there in Mirkwood?

Well we didn't know it was Sauron of course. When we sent some folks over to welcome him to the neighborhood he said he was a necromancer. When they asked what that meant, he said it was sort of like an encyclopedia salesman.

[to] Eowyn: What's it like being a shieldmaiden in a man's world?

Feed the men, wash the damn dishes, look after the kids and the old folks, clean the castle, polish the armour, kill the Witchking, feed the men, wash the dishes...

There are one or two things I could say about certain fandoms, and...  oh well, nevermind.
